What is Chinese Drywall

What is Chinese drywall?

This term has become a generic in describing homes that may have been contructed with imported drywall; drywall  that arrived from China starting in 2001. It is said that certain elements including weather and the fact that wall board skids were stored in shipping containers exposed to excessive humidity is what helped to compromised the wall boards. What ever the reason, the fact is clear that certain homes especially those built in 2004 to 2006  have been the most reactive in terms of out gassing toxic Hydrogen Sulfide into the indoor air.

Chinese drwyall is also commonly referred to as Chinese sheet rock, toxic drywall, defective drywall, problematic drywall, corrosive drywall, and imported drywall.  We prefer to use the term as does the CPSC, REATIVE/PROBLEMATIC DRYWALL. Several reports indicated that the suspect drywall is not limited to drywall manufactured in China.  Some Canadian drywall has been discovered to be tainted as well.  Some argue that this drywall was originally manufactured in China and re-branded in Canada. Most estimates indicate that homes built between 2001 and 2009 could be affected and that the peak of the Chinese drywall problem appears in homes built between 2004 and 2006.

During these years, domestic drywall supply could not keep up with increased demand that resulted from the national housing boom and reconstruction efforts that were a function of the hurricanes in Florida and the Gulf Coast. The answer was drywall imported from other countries, most notably China.

Recently knauf, a Chinese drywall manufacturer has settled with two large builders. It is not known how this will affect the class action lawsuits and individual claims. Further, it is not known how smaller, local builders will be affected.
